Completion of the Hegwein future factory

S + P planned and implemented an integrated factory concept for production, logistics and administration

Huelsenberg Holding GmbH & Co. KG (Huelsenberg) selected the consulting and planning company Dr. Schönheit + Partner (S + P) for planning and realizing the future factory for Hegwein GmbH (Hegwein). Within 15 months, the new factory building was built at the new location in Korntal-Münchingen near Stuttgart, which houses logistics and administration areas in addition to a value-stream-oriented production. The functional areas are both functionally and optically integrated in such a way that rooms can be used flexibly, processes are efficient, and people, as the most important resource, control all processes. In compliance with the agreed due dates, Hegwein opened the new factory on April 6, 2020 and the entire move to the new location took place.

S + P is a specialist in integrated factory planning and high-quality industrial architecture. When designing its future factory, Hegwein relied on the innovative planning approach of S + P Integrated. This approach combines factory structure planning geared towards lean management, in which the work processes are optimized and on the basis of which the industrial architects from S + P carry out the object and outdoor facilities planning: Lean Management meets Corporate Architecture. The result is an individual industrial architecture tailored to Hegwein’s needs that takes processes and products into account.

Based on the extensive planning by S + P, the Hegwein future factory was built on time on the approximately 11,000 m² site in Korntal-Münchingen within just 15 months. In addition to the functional areas of production and logistics, there is also the administration on a gross floor area of more than 4,200 m². Architecturally, this can already be seen in the facade of the building: the modern entrance design with a bracket that spans the entire floor in the yellow company color emphasizes the integration of the different company areas in one building. The minimalist use of walls and columns ensures that the rooms are highly versatile for the user. The generous use of windows enables a view of the production and the office areas from every floor.

Hegwein is an important part of the DURAG Group and has been a specialist in the field of gas and oil pilot burners and gas burners for industrial applications for 70 years. With the construction of the future factory, Hegwein sets new standards in the sense of lean production and Industry 4.0 and thus increases its competitiveness and future viability.

“After starting up production in our new future factory, the advantage of the integrated solution of factory structure planning with adapted industrial architecture from S + P manifests itself,” says Rainer Böcher, Managing Director, Hegwein GmbH. “The production flow from incoming goods to shipping, which is adapted to Hegwein’s needs, ensures that we can produce our individual items and small series efficiently. The bright and friendly premises in production and administration with a modern, open office structure significantly support employee satisfaction and, in particular, the overall quality of work.”

“Thanks to the good execution planning and description of the expected services, the Hegwein future factory could not only be realized on schedule, but also on budget. Looking back, we can confirm that choosing S + P in combination with a general contractor was the right decision for this construction project”, says Christian Kaspras, Head of Technology, Huelsenberg Holding GmbH & Co. KG. “Working with all of the staff at Dr. Schönheit + Partner Consulting and Engineering and the project management on the part of Hegwein and Huelsenberg Holding was always based on goal-oriented professionalism, reliability, personal responsibility, and respect – this was the only way to implement such a stringent project from the start.”

“What was special about the collaboration between users, planners and investors was the very close dialogue in the system development and architecture design,” said Dr. Martin Schönheit, Managing Director, Dr. Schönheit + Partner Consulting Engineering. “We as planners are talking about a system architecture that can adapt to changing future perspectives of Hegwein in terms of space and expandability from the inside out.”

“The partnership-based cooperation between the planning team, the client’s representative, the general contractor and the user of the factory was extremely constructive and effective from the factory structure planning to the ramp-up of the entire factory,” says Peter Thomé, Architect and Managing Director, Dr. Schönheit + Partner Engineering GmbH. “This is reflected on the one hand in the short implementation period of the Hegwein future factory, but also in the final result: an efficient factory with a human-oriented architecture that manifests itself on the outside, for example, in the two-storey shop window towards Kornwestheimer Strasse.”
